Master's Degree, Year 1
The Master 1 in English-Speaking Regions builds upon the curriculum offered in the L3 LLCER program. A program of the highest caliber, it combines a traditional English studies track with specialized English training.
Unless otherwise specified, the Master’s 1 year—which is designed to strengthen students’ language skills and knowledge of the English-speaking world—is completed through a study abroad program at a partner English-speaking university.
The Master 1 in English-Speaking Worlds aims to train top-level English studies specialists who possess the skills traditionally developed in English-speaking studies:
- excellent command of written and spoken English,
- excellent proficiency in English-to-French and French-to-English translation,
- in-depth skills in linguistics and phonology,
- the ability to analyze major literary texts from the English-speaking world,
- in-depth knowledge of English-speaking cultures,
A degree in English studies supplemented by specialized training in English
Distinctive features of the Master 1 program at ENS Paris-Saclay, building on the training provided in the third year of undergraduate studies (L3), students develop a strong disciplinary foundation in specialized English (theory and pedagogy of specialized English, knowledge of major fields of application—scientific, legal, economic, and medical English—as well as expertise in discourse analysis and terminology).
International Study Abroad in the Second Year of the Program
Unless an exception is granted, the Master 1 year, which is intended to strengthen students’ language skills and knowledge of the English-speaking world, is spent on exchange at a partner English-speaking university.
Assessment takes into account:
- several (between two and four, on a case-by-case basis) seminars at the “graduate ” or “postgraduate” level taken at these institutions;
- a disciplinary course via distance learning in specialized English, linguistics, and translation/text analysis.
Note 1: The choice of partner university, which must be determined as early as the third year of undergraduate studies, must be based on academic criteria (bibliographic resources, research center focus, organization of events, etc.);
Note 2: Consequently, the selection of seminars taken at partner universities must be based on the thesis topic developed by the student in collaboration with their research advisor.
Career Outcomes for Graduates of the Program
All students graduating from the M1 in English-Speaking Regions program go on to pursue an M2 degree (or take teaching certification exams such as the agrégation in English), with the goal of becoming teachers or teacher-researchers in English-speaking studies, which are the program’s primary career paths.
